In any case, the distance is purely informative and can’t be guaranteed. Only the power budget is considered as relevant value and is guaranteed by Skylane Optics®.

A basic rule to calculate the indicative distance is:

  • Tx 1310nm on a G.652 fiber          has a maximum attenuation of 0,35dB/km
  • Tx 1550nm on a G.652 fiber          has a maximum attenuation of 0,25dB/km

On a xWDM link, the customer has to remind to add the insertion-loss due to connectors and mux/demux, the penalty due to chromatic dispersion, and other attenuation due to fiber quality, the system margin, etc.

For commercial facilities, Skylane Optics has chosen to write the distance (in kilometers) into its P/N. This distance is purely informative and is calculated for a wavelength of 1550nm.

1. Fast Ethernet, Gigabit Ethernet, 2x/4x Fibre channel, OC-48

Distance [km] Power Budget [dB]
40 16
80 24
100 28
120 32
140 36
160 40

2. 8x/10x Fibre Channel, 10x Gigabit Ethernet, OC-192

Distance [km] Power Budget [dB]
40 14
70 (for CWDM) 23
80 (for DWDM) 23
